Why do Vet referral forms need to be completed?

It is the Law - Under the "Veterinary surgeons Act 1966" Musculoskeletal therapists are part of the vet-led team and therefore remedial treatment by ‘physiotherapists’ requires delegation by a veterinary surgeon who has first examined the animal and Animals cared for or treated by musculoskeletal therapists must be registered with a veterinary surgeon.

However - Musculoskeletal maintenance care for a healthy animal, for instance massage, does not require delegation by a veterinary surgeon, however the animal must still be registered with a veterinary surgeon. At the first sign that there may be any underlying injury, disease or pathology maintenance treatments should cease and the owner of the animal should be asked to take their animal to a veterinary surgeon for clinical examination

How to Complete?

Vet Referrals/ Permission forms (these can be complete via email)

1st section - Owner  The owner/ guardian of the animal signs to give permission for treatment.
If this is a maintenance case whereby they opt not to request veterinary permission, they acknowledge they are to the best of their ability informing the practitioner of any historic ailments or injuries, and believe the animal to be sound and healthy.

2nd section - Vet  If not a maintenance case the referring vet will sign to certify that they have examined the named animal at rest., and can find no reason unless stated why the animal should not undertake moderate controlled exercise, or be subjected to careful Physiotherapy treatment and manipulation. They will also include any relevant diagnostic information and lab data, and notify me of any heart conditions or implants which may effect my treatment programme. where possible even for maintenance cases i prefer to have this information from a vet where possible.
